Oracles of Happy's debut album, Trouble in Paradise, is a meditation on dwindling empire and the various hopes and fictions we cling to in uncertain times. OOH's music combines social observation with accessible melodies reminiscient of XTC, Peter Gabriel, The Kinks, and Cate Le Bon.

The album is available for purchase from Bandcamp, and to stream on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal, etc.

ORACLES OF HAPPY

About

Oracles of Happy is the musical alter ego of multimedia artist John Feodorov. Though best known for his visual art, Feodorov has never strayed far from music, maintaining a parallel creative life that has taken him through decades of songwriting, collaboration, and adventurous musical experimentation. His artwork has been featured on programs such as Art21 and is included in numerous public collections throughout North America.

Trouble in Paradise, the 12-song debut from Oracles of Happy, is his latest musical project. Drawing on years of collaborative efforts, including his more recent work with the bands, Animal Saint and The Almost Faithful, the album features drummer and percussionist James Lord (The Almost Faithful, Student Nurse).

Feodorov grew up on a musical diet of early country pioneers like Johnny Cash, Jimmie Rodgers, and Hank Williams, as well as the songs and traditions of his Navajo heritage. As a teenager, he discovered The Kinks, XTC, Kate Bush, and David Bowie, and began to see how rock music could be a place to experiment with lyrics, textures, and ambitious melodic ideas.

Combining his fascination with music and modernist avant-garde art, Feodorov began co-organizing what he and his collaborators dubbed "Insta-bands": spontaneous, one-off multimedia performance events staged at the homes of friends and acquaintances. Part musical experiment and part performance art, these absurdist happenings cultivated a sense for the absurd that continues to inform his work.

The songs of Oracles of Happy are melodic, philosophical, and occasionally sardonic, bringing to mind songwriters such as Ray Davies and Andy Partridge. There’s a consistent probing of life's contradictions, and a healthy suspicion of things that seem a little too good to be true.
